PRP Hair Restoration: What to Do in the First 72 Hours (Platelet Rich Plasma Hair Treatment)

By BeRejuved Medical Spa & Wellness Studio East Side | September 12, 2026

I see a lot of busy New Yorkers doing PRP Hair Restoration on a tight schedule, and the biggest rule is simple: keep your scalp calm and clean, and don’t “work” the area. For the first 72 hours, skip washing until I tell you it’s time, avoid heavy sweating, alcohol, saunas, swimming, and anti-inflammatory meds. Those few days are when your platelet rich plasma hair treatment gets the best chance to do its job.

PRP Hair Restoration aftercare in the first 72 hours for platelet rich plasma hair treatment

PRP Hair Restoration is a 45-minute visit in my Midtown East, New York studio, and it’s designed to stimulate hair follicles and support new growth, thickness, and a healthier growth phase. Your job afterward is to protect the scalp so the micro-injection sites settle quickly and you don’t accidentally irritate the area during your commute, workouts, or hair routine.

0 to 24 hours after PRP hair treatment: keep it dry, cool, and hands off

Right after PRP, it’s normal for the scalp to feel a little tender, tight, or warm. Some people notice mild swelling or small bumps where the injections went in. The goal today is to let everything settle without heat, sweat, friction, or pressure.

Today’s non-negotiables: don’t wash your hair, don’t scratch or massage your scalp, and don’t put a tight hat or headband on the treated area.

  • Keep the scalp clean by keeping your hands off it. If you’re in Midtown heat or stuck on the subway, resist the urge to touch or rub.
  • Skip the gym today. I generally recommend no vigorous exercise for at least 24 to 48 hours because sweat and heat can irritate the scalp.
  • Avoid alcohol for 24 to 48 hours. Alcohol can increase swelling and dryness, which is not what we want on day one.
  • Pain relief: I generally recommend avoiding NSAIDs (like ibuprofen/naproxen) and other blood-thinning meds for 48 to 72 hours unless your prescribing doctor has you on them. Acetaminophen is typically fine.
  • Sleep smart: if you feel puffy, sleep with your head slightly elevated. It usually calms things down by morning.

If you need to get back to the office, I’d rather you take a calm route home, avoid rush-hour crowds when you can, and let your scalp breathe. The less friction and sweat, the better your start.

24 to 72 hours: washing, workouts, sun, and the “don’t rub it” rule

This is the window where most people accidentally sabotage their PRP hair loss results. It’s not dramatic. It’s little things like a hard shampoo scrub, a spin class, or a sweaty summer commute across Midtown Manhattan.

When you can wash

I’ll tell you the exact timing for your wash day, but generally it’s 24 to 48 hours. When it’s time, use lukewarm water and a mild, sulfate-free shampoo. Lather in your hands first, then let the suds glide over the scalp. Rinse well. Pat dry. No vigorous rubbing.

Exercise and sweat

I generally want you to avoid heavy sweating, saunas, and hot yoga for 48 to 72 hours. If you’re commuting from Queens, Jersey City, Hoboken, or Brooklyn, plan for the warm platforms and crowded trains. Bring a clean, soft hair tie, keep hair off the scalp gently, and skip tight hats that rub.

Swimming, steam rooms, and public pools

Hold off on swimming for at least 72 hours. Chlorine, ocean water, and shared pool environments can irritate injection sites. Steam rooms and saunas are a no during this window too. Heat and bacteria are a bad combo for a freshly treated scalp.

Days 4 to 7: PRP hair thinning care that keeps results on track

By now, most tenderness has settled. If you still feel a little sensitivity, that can be normal. The main focus in week one is avoiding irritation, sun, and aggressive hair habits that inflame the scalp.

No scalp massage for 1 to 2 weeks. Even if it feels good, rubbing can keep the scalp irritated longer than it needs to be.

Be gentle with styling. Avoid high heat at the roots, tight ponytails, and anything that pulls. If you must blow dry, use low heat and keep the nozzle moving.

Sun matters. Avoid direct sun on the scalp for the first few days, especially in summer. If you need coverage, choose a loose, soft hat that doesn’t rub the treated area.

And yes, you can go back to normal life. Just keep it low-friction for a week. A calm scalp tends to respond better over time, especially if you’re doing PRP hair loss sessions on a schedule.

Products and habits I like after platelet rich plasma hair loss treatments

You don’t need a complicated routine. You do need a gentle one. In the first week, I stick to products that keep the scalp comfortable and clean without stripping it.

  • Shampoo: mild and sulfate-free after your first approved wash. Avoid harsh clarifying shampoos for at least a week.
  • Conditioner: keep it on mid-lengths and ends at first, not rubbed into the scalp.
  • Styling products: go light. Heavy waxes, dry shampoo, and gritty texturizers can clog and irritate when the scalp is still settling.
  • Hydration and sleep: simple but real. Drink water and aim for solid sleep in the first week. Your body does a lot of repair work when you’re off your feet.

If you’re not sure about a product you already use, bring a photo of the ingredient list to your follow-up. I’ll tell you if it’s a “fine now” product or a “wait another week” product.

When to reach out to me (and what’s normal)

Mild tenderness, small bumps, and a little swelling can be normal right after PRP hair treatment, especially in the first day or two. It should trend better, not worse. If something feels off, I want to hear about it.

Reach out promptly if you notice increasing pain, spreading redness, pus or drainage, or fever. Those can be signs of infection and you shouldn’t wait it out.

I also want you to check in if you’re unsure about medications, a post-treatment event, or timing hair services. People travel in from the Upper East Side, Midtown Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Jersey City, and Hoboken, so I’m used to helping you plan around commute time and summer sweat.

“The staff was friendly, professional, and always willing to answer my questions. They made me feel comfortable throughout the entire process…”
